It Hasn’t All Been Done Before: Why Your Voice is Unique

Posted on August 12, 2013

In this age of the internet, it feels as though everyone and their mother is busy blogging. There are millions of different sites out there covering millions of different topics.

It seems like no matter what ideas you come up with, they’ve all been done before.

Feeling like you don’t have anything new to say can be a big hurdle when setting up your own blog. How are you supposed to create key content about the most important issues in your field without covering something someone else has already written about?

Simple: you don’t.

Blogging is not about reinventing the wheel. Blogging is about sharing a particular opinion that others resonate with.

Your perspective alone is unique, you can take a topic that’s been discussed since the beginning of time and re-spin it using your own thoughts and views. Focus on what you can bring to your niche.

Find out what you’re good at

Don’t be shy, figure out what it is that sets you apart from the crowd. It could be experience, great personal anecdotes or technical skill. Soft skills like a sense of humor or the ability to explain things well shouldn’t be underestimated either.

Be inspired by others but let your own words flow

Follow your peers and find out who else is out there blogging about your topic. What do they do well? What could you do better? Make sure you don’t become too fixated on how your fellow bloggers are writing or you risk stunting your own unique voice. It’s best to strike a healthy balance between consuming and creating.

Don’t be afraid to disagree

If you have an alternative viewpoint, get it out there! There’s nothing like revisiting an popular old topic with a healthy dose of cynicism. Expand on previously discussed ideas by reversing your perspective, a surefire way to break new ground in a saturated niche.
